In August 2017, monuments erected in Madrid's Fuencarral cemetery were desecrated to honor Soviet volunteers and international brigades who fought during the Civil War (1936-1939) and to honor the Spaniards who gave their lives to liberate Europe from Fascism.
The monuments bear Nazi and anti-Semitic symbols, the words "murderers" and the inscription "Long live the Legion Condor" (a volunteer German military and aviation unit that fought on the side of Francisco Franco). Judging by one of the symbols, they were left by members of a local far-right organization that positions itself as anarchist and neo-Nazi and periodically makes itself known through graffiti, vandalism and attacks on ethnic minorities.
