Since gaining independence in 1991, Tajikistan has developed one of the most restrictive systems of state control over religious life in the post-Soviet region. Although the overwhelming majority of the country's population identifies as Muslim, the government of President Emomali Rahmon has increasingly viewed independent religious activity as a potential challenge to political stability and state authority.
