Murders Gdańsk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz became a victim of political hatred

On January 13, 2019, the right-liberal mayor of Gdańsk associated with the ruling Civic Platform party, Mr. Pawel Adamowicz, was stabbed by an assassin. This attack was caught on video and seen by thousands of people. Mr. Adamovich died the next day. The incident occurred during the 27th finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, the largest annual charity event in Poland. It was the first political assassination since 1989, when the communist regime in Poland ceased to exist.

It was the first political assassination since 1989.

The murderer, Stephane Wilmont, who had previously had problems with the law, killed the mayor of the city out of political hatred for his party, which he believed was guilty of unfair, in his view, treatment by the police while he was detained under other circumstances.

The murder of Pawel Adamowicz was strongly condemned by political circles in Poland and abroad. European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans, among others, expressed deep regret. On January 14, 2019, Polish President Andrzej Duda decided to declare the day of Pawel Adamowicz's funeral a day of national mourning.
